Philosophical Research Society ONLINE
March 1 + March 8 11:00am PST
Wait, Jesus is non-binary and their feminine side is named Sophia? Sophia is actually our Savior and she lives inside of us too? Wait, she gave our planet its soul? Hang on, Sophia existed before Christianity and was the thunder that rolled through the void to give voice to creation?? Yes, friends! All this and more! Come with me to "SOPHIA: The Feminine Voice of God" to invoke this miraculous presence, tracing her figure through Hellenistic magic, Gnostic risings and fallings, and into alchemy where she reveals the secrets of the All to the Many! Online at PRS March 1st + 8th ... Why yes - it will be recorded!
This two-part lecture & class series explores the evolution of Sophia, from her roots in Ancient Greek philosophy to her role in Gnosticism, alchemy, and modern spirituality. These lectures examine Sophia as the embodiment of wisdom, the World Soul, and the Holy Spirit, tracing her guises through history as a Saviour Goddess, Apocalyptic Virgin, and Mother of God. In addition to a lecture on the philosophical, visual and literary contexts of Sophia, the first lecture in the series features a close reading of the Pistis Sophia, a Gnostic text describing the rise and fall of the World Soul. The second lecture in the series features a meditation on alchemical representations of Sophia and includes a meditation where we can reflect on how she appears to each of us uniquely.
MARCH 1ST, Part 1, a history of Sophia in the ancient world, close reading of the Gnostic Pistis Sophia
MARCH 8TH, Part 2, a study of Sophia in the alchemical tradition and in visionary works of art and literature
